Raymond Mattia was unarmed and had his hands raised when he was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents in May 2023. The agents were responding to a 911 call that said shots had been fired. Mattia’s family said they have not been able to get basic information from the government about the death, such as how many shots were fired and why agents fired in the first place.

🌵 Speed limits are dropping on several roads around Tucson.

The city council is expected to approve a plan to lower the speed limit by 5 miles per hour in several locations, including on Broadway from Country Club to Wilmot. Speed limits are evaluated annually as part of the city’s Safe Streets program.

🌵 The trial of the man accused of shooting and killing UA professor Thomas Meixner is wrapping up.

The defense argues that Murad Dervish should be found guilty except insane for second-degree murder, while the prosecution is pushing for first-degree murder and other felony charges. In a recording of a psych evaluation played during the trial, Dervish told a psychiatrist that he didn’t know shooting Meixner was wrong.
