Tuesday Microburst: $858 million for new jail, Saguaro East night drive, migrants endure cold

🌵 A new jail could cost Pima County much more than originally expected. 

A commission chartered to evaluate conditions at the Pima County Jail said that accounting for future inflation, a new facility could cost up to $858 million. Another option is to renovate the existing facility for $623 million. The group No New Jail Coalition has produced a competing report that argues the funds should be spent on public housing and other services.

🌵 Aid workers are struggling to help migrants stranded outdoors at the border.

The humanitarian group No More Deaths described a harrowing situation on Friday in which hundreds of migrants endured the rain and frigid temperatures in remote locations. No More Deaths said that the Border Patrol has warned them that transporting migrants is illegal, and that they should call 911 in the event of an emergency. The group called 911 multiple times but help did not arrive.

🌵 Recycling centers are now open for live Christmas trees. 

From now through Jan. 15, 2024, you can take your live Christmas tree to one of nine recycling sites located around Tucson. The sites are open during daylight hours, seven days a week. All decorations must be removed first.

🌵 Arizona, California, and Nevada are nearing a deal to use less Colorado River water.

The three Lower Basin states are trying to close an annual deficit between river supply and demand. Doing so will require cuts by each state. All Colorado River states must come to a new water usage agreement by the end of 2026, when the current agreement expires.

🌵 Take a nighttime drive through Saguaro National Park East this Friday.

Guided auto tours through the park’s 8-mile loop trail last an hour and a half and leave every half hour from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. There are several stops, including a ¼ mile hike along an accessible trail. Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight. Reservations must be made by calling 520-733-5153.
