Thursday Microburst: Food truck courts, election-related felony indictments, ice skating

Good afternoon. Showers are likely overnight and tomorrow morning. On Friday expect a high of 61°, and it should be sunny on Saturday with a high of 63°.

🌵 Two Cochise County Supervisors received felony indictments for activities surrounding the 2022 general election.

Republicans Peggy Judd and Tom Crosby were indicted by a state grand jury on felony counts of conspiracy and interference with an election officer. The charges surround the 2022 general election, when Judd and Crosby did not vote to canvass the results (essentially, make the results official) before a Nov. 22 deadline, citing problems with vote-counting machines that were debunked by the secretary of state’s office.

🌵 Governor Katie Hobbs declared her support for a 2024 ballot measure that would ensure abortion access.

The Arizona for Abortion Access Act would prohibit laws banning a person’s access to an abortion before (and in most cases, after) fetal viability. Arizona has two abortion laws on the books: One from 1864 that bans abortions with a penalty of mandatory prison time, and one from 2022 that bans abortions past 15 weeks. Only the 2022 law is currently in effect, but abortion advocates worry a court could rule that the 1864 law should be honored instead.

🌵 TUSD could sell its headquarters to a student housing developer.

The school district has been offered $18.3 million for its headquarters at 1010 E. 10th St. near Broadway and Park, which currently needs $7.4 million in repairs. TUSD is considering moving into the University of Arizona’s Service Annex north of downtown. Any profit from the sale and move would be used for district building improvements.

🌵 A new ordinance will allow for more food truck courts in Tucson.

Inspired by The Pit on Tucson’s east side, a food truck court allows multiple food trucks to congregate and share resources. Potential locations must have onsite restrooms, parking spaces, and be located at least 600 feet from residential properties.

🌵 Lastly, you can usher in December at Tucson’s outdoor ice rink.

The rink is located in front of the Tucson Convention Center ticket office. You must reserve a 90-minute session in advance online. Skates are included, and you can also rent a skate assist if you need a little help staying on your feet.
